In our articles, we have briefly mentioned the dos and don’ts of taking care of acne through our product reviews and acne types and medication. Here is your basic advice list of what to avoid when you have acne and acne-prone skin. Follow appropriately or whatever suits your preference.
Astringents, masks, toners and exfoliatiors
The scrubbing properties may be too hard and not good for sensitive skin. They may contain a high dose of salicylic acid and/or benzoyl peroxide which will irritate the skin or make it worse. If on prescribed acne medication, stick to it, and nothing more.
Hair-care products
Hair gel ingredients normally include some oil base, fragrant or not, which easily seeps under the skin. The oils, when heated and mixed with sweat, can dry out the skin faster and clog up pores, a primary acne cause.
Pick + Pop + Squeeze = NO
It is a hard temptation but you must avoid it to heal better. They may be gone faster but they will come back. Popped pimples will heal slower and you will have scarring.
Oil-based Skin care products
Oil-free products will help moisturize the skin without adding more oil under the skin. However, if the oil-based product has an additional drying agent, then it is okay to try out. Look for ‘oil-free’ or ‘noncomedogenic’ when buying your preferred product.
Rubbing Alcohol
Alcohol is a useful cleaning agent to dry out oily skin but it will not prevent acne breakouts. For more sensitive skin, don’t use alcohol as it will only make your skin red and itchy.
Tanning
Sun exposure damages the skin if under it too long. When using acne treatments that have Retinoid / Vitamin-A-based medicine, you must avoid tanning and wear protective clothing.
Medicines like these thin the skin layer, making it very sensitive to Ultraviolet Radiation. When you stop, your sensitivity will decrease but the acne treatment will stop working.
Skin cancer may also occur if you over-tan; especially for those over 35 whose risk factor is 75 percent. It may even occur in younger age groups.
Touching and Cleaning
It is important to wash your face thoroughly when you wake up, after you eat, after a long and sweaty day, or when removing makeup. Dirt, irritating chemicals and oil will stay on your skin if not washed properly.
As with picking and popping, avoid touching your acne or acne-prone skin during the day. Touching is just as irritating and cause flare ups. Additionally, your fingers may have touched something unhealthy.
